I though you may all like something a bit different. This is one of our Babies on the Hanblechia Designs Ranch, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. USA.
The Lakota saw the elk (hehaka) as having special powers. To dream of an elk meant that you would have “Elk Medicine”. This could be used to attract the women, for it was believed that the bull elk was very brave and protected his herd, which the female elk would find him irresistible. There is an old ritual which states that if you were to dream of an elk you must wear sticks like elk horns, rawhide like ears, paint your self yellow with black on your hands, feet, chest and back. Additionally a circle made of eagle feathers was to be placed on your right side and a rawhide mask worn. You were considered to have great powers for you were deemed to have this “Elk Medicine”. The People would call on you for advise and to heal wounds concerning matters of the heart and emotion.
Elk men were said to have created the first flute; the musical instrument that would play beautiful love songs.
To give a women the ivory teeth of the elk meant devotion and strength.
Hope you all enjoy this clip and the myth behind the elk.
